The Toyota Hilux is South Africa's favourite bakkie – and because it's been on sale in so many versions, it's easy to buy an accessory for the wrong one. Floor mats, grilles and trims are all generation-specific. Here's how to tell exactly which Hilux you have.

Hilux D-4D (2005–2016)
The previous-generation Hilux is usually called the "D-4D" after its 2.5 and 3.0 D-4D turbo-diesel engines. It received facelifts during its life, including one in 2011, so the exact year matters for parts.

Hilux GD-6 (2016–now)
The current-generation Hilux arrived in South Africa in 2016 with the new 2.4 and 2.8 GD-6 turbo-diesel engines – which is why owners call it the "GD6". If your engine says GD-6, you have this generation. The cabin and floor are the same shape across the GD-6 years, which is why our GD6 floor mats fit from 2016 onwards.

Pre-facelift or facelift GD-6?
This matters for exterior parts like grilles. Toyota gave the GD-6 Hilux a major facelift that went on sale in South Africa in October 2020:
- Pre-facelift (2016–2020): the original GD-6 front end, with a smaller grille.
- Facelift (late 2020 onwards): a much larger, more aggressive trapezoid grille and redesigned headlights.
Our matte black GR-style grille fits the pre-facelift GD-6 (2016–2020), including the Raider – not the facelift.
What about the Legend?
"Legend" is Toyota's name for its top-of-the-range Hilux models, which come with extra styling and features. If your Hilux is a Legend model, our matte black headlight trims are made to fit it – they stick on with 3M tape, no drilling.
Cab type matters too
Single cab, Xtra cab and double cab Hiluxes have different cabins and floors. All our Hilux floor mats are made for the double cab.
The easiest ways to check
- Check the engine: D-4D (2.5 or 3.0) or GD-6 (2.4 or 2.8). Petrol models share the body of their generation, so use the year and shape.
- Check your registration papers for the year of first registration.
- Compare the grille to tell a pre-facelift GD-6 from a facelift.
