Ask a South African Ranger owner what they drive and you'll often hear "T7" or "T9" rather than a model year. These street names are handy, but they cause a lot of confusion – and buying floor mats or accessories for the wrong generation means they won't fit. Here's a plain-English guide to the modern Ford Ranger generations sold in South Africa, with photos of each front end so you can match yours.
Quick guide
| Street name | Official name (Ford) | Years (approx.) | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| T6 | T6 (PX) | 2011/12–2015 | The original T6-platform Ranger |
| T7 | T6 facelift (PX MkII) | 2015–2018 | First facelift of the T6 |
| T8 | T6 second facelift (PX MkIII) | 2019–2022 | Second facelift, adds the 2.0 bi-turbo and 10-speed auto |
| T9 | T6.2 (program P703, model code RA) | 2022–now | The all-new Next-Gen Ranger |
"T7", "T8" and "T9" are informal names used by owners and the aftermarket, not official Ford badges – Ford itself calls these Rangers the T6, T6 facelifts and T6.2 – but the street names are the easiest way to describe your Ranger to a parts supplier.
T6, T7 and T8: one platform, three faces
The T6, T7 and T8 are all versions of the same basic Ranger, built on Ford's T6 platform. The cabin and floor are closely related across these years, but the front styling, trim and engines changed. Compare your Ranger's front with the photos below.
T6 (about 2011/12–2015)

The original shape, with 2.2 and 3.2 TDCi diesel engines.
T7 (2015–2018) – first facelift

The first facelift arrived in South Africa in 2015, with a new, bolder front end and an updated cabin. Engines carried over from the T6.
T8 (2019–2022) – second facelift

The second facelift in 2019 refreshed the styling again and introduced the 2.0 single-turbo and bi-turbo diesel with a 10-speed automatic – the easiest way to spot one. The first Ranger Raptor also belongs to this generation.
T9: the Next-Gen Ranger (2022–now)

The current Ranger is a completely new vehicle. In Ford's terms: 2022–now: T6.2, program P703. The model code is RA, street name: "T9". It went on sale in South Africa in December 2022, double cab first, and is built at Ford's Silverton plant.
How to recognise a T9:
- C-shaped LED headlight signature that frames the headlights, with a wide grille joining them
- A much wider, squarer, more "F-150" look than the older Rangers
- Large portrait-style touchscreen in the centre of the dash
- Engines include the 2.0 single-turbo and bi-turbo diesels and the 3.0 V6 turbo-diesel
Because the T9 is all-new, its floor and cabin are different from the T6, T7 and T8. Parts and floor mats for a T7 or T8 will not fit a T9, and vice versa.
The easiest ways to check
- Compare the front of your Ranger with the photos above.
- Look at your registration papers or licence disc for the year of first registration.
- Check the engine: a 2.0 bi-turbo with a 10-speed auto means a T8 or T9; a 3.0 V6 means a T9.
- Look at the headlights: the C-shaped LED light signature means a T9.
